Posted Tuesday, July 18, 2006 Freddy Powers was Recognized and Honored by the "Center for Texas Music" April 27, 2011 and is a finalist for the title "Texas State Musician". Freddy received the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the Texas Music Academy July, 2011. He was inducted into the Western Swing Society "Hall of Fame" October 1, 2006, was inducted into the "Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame" March 12th, 2006. Freddy's latest cd "My Great Escape" released January 2004, was produced by Merle Haggard and recorded with Merle Haggard's Strangers band along with Freddy's present guitar player Django Porter. The cd features Merle in three Duets with Freddy... Including a song called "Ol Country Singer" written by Merle and Freddy and is also the single for Merle's new "Live at Billy Bob's" cd.... "Wild Party Blues" written by the two of them back in the house boat days ... A duet on "Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn" written by Freddy, Freddy's portrayal of the days while living on the houseboats with Merle they call the Spree of 83'. A few brand new songs written by Freddy and partner Bill McDavid. Also includes a great new song and title of the cd "My Great Escape" written by John Rich and Big Kenny Alphin better known as Big and Rich for hit song "Save A Horse Ride A Cowboy" and writers of Gretchen Wilson's hit "Redneck Woman"..... Big and Rich also sing harmonies on this cut while John Rich plays bass.
Freddy and songwriting partner Bill McDavid together are known as songwriting duo Rogers and Hammerhead. Not only have they written many great songs and having them recorded but such artist as Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Big and Rich, Doug Supernaw,and the Texas Girls Choir but they were nominated for a Cable Ace Award for their songwriters television show. Freddy as producer and Bill as Executive producer together they produced a pop album "Unforgettable" Merle Haggard released December, 2004 on Captital Records includes a new Freddy written song "Still Missing You" getting great radio play. Their latest cut has been with Big and Rich "Filthy Rich" on their "Coming to Your City" cd released November 15, 2005 a R&H, B&R with friend and fellow songwriter Sonny Throckmorton collaboration.
